The first feature film of Jadwiga Kędzierzawska. A portrait of children brought up in an orphanage, who despite the efforts and commitment of their teachers, escape into a world of dreams and phantasies because of feeling lonely and missing their real parents.
Alek has been living in the orphanage ever since he remembers. He has no memories of his mother yet he still hopes to find her one day. In his child’s imagination he sees her in the places where he spends time every day. He writes touching letters to her In his notebook. One day, a new boy comes to the orphanage. Alek decides to take care of him and help him adapt to the new environment. He tries not to make his intention too obvious by being rather rough towards the newcomer. He manages to protect him against self-mutilation. A new teacher starts working at the orphanage and develops mutual understanding with the boy. Alek tells her about the letters he’s written to his mother. Anna is afraid that the reality may leave the boy bitterly disillusioned. She tells him that his mother remains unknown. They boy refuses to accept the news and reacts aggressively. The new boy finds a foster home and leaves the orphanage. Anna is also going leave the orphanage. The boy feels very lonely and decides to run away from the orphanage, however, in the end he abandons his plan and returns.
