The Last Day of Summer

(Ostatni dzień lata)

1958   >   psychological drama

A film by Tadeusz Konwicki, novelist, screenwriter and film director, laureate of the Gdynia Film Festival 2011 Platinum Lions award and a Polish Film Academy Eagle lifetime achievement award.

The film received the Grand Prix at the Venice International Film Festival in1958.

An ascetic work of art, the lowest-costing film in the history of Polish cinematography,
filmed in semi-amateur conditions by the young writer and his friends.

A movie manifestation of new-wave poetry that was first in Poland and among the avant-garde of Europe.

A young man and a mature woman meet on a secluded beach. Lonely, they are marked by both war experiences and personal drama. They can’t reach each other, burned out on the inside
and burdened with war trauma and losing their loved ones. They are mistrustful towards other people.

An intimate psychological study of solitude and helplessness of two people unable to commit
to life partnership.
