A love story of a young Polish woman and a German man set against the backdrop of post-war times when their relationship is condemned by those who actively fought in the war. “This war keeps coming back like a boomerang,” this is how Kurt sums up post-war Polish-German relations.
A young German – Kurt comes to Wrocław from the Federal Republic of Germany. He buys a house where his parents used to live and which is now inhabited by the Lichosik family including Ewa, the daughter of Mr Lichosik who is a car mechanic. Ewa is an intern at the hotel where Kurt decides to stay. They start falling for each other. Her father, who mentally is still stuck in the wartime, thinks their love is a disgrace. He decides to send his daughter off to Krakow. There’s something wrong with brakes in Kurt’s car. Willing to follow Ewa, the boy tries to fix them by himself. He sets off and finds her. They continue the journey together. They go to the former concentration camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau. In the meantime the car mechanic realizes the car is not in a good condition. The radio transmits messages for the driver to pull over, however the young people don’t hear them. There’s an accident.
Great cinematography of Tadeusz Wieżan showing Wroclaw in the 60s.
