Barrier

(Bariera)

1966   >   psychological/ drama

Another film of Jerzy Skolimowski awarded with Grand Prix in 1966 in Bergamo (at the Bergamo Film Meeting).

The director continuously seeks new forms of film expression. The music was composed by Krzysztof Komenda and the songs were preformed by Ewa Demarczyk and Novi Singers.

An analysis of the moods and awareness of the new generation. Innovative and new-wave approach as the film breaks with the traditional narration and introduces a new type of character, created by the film directors debuting in those years.

A psychological drama showing the attempts to overcome the barriers of the contemporary world: age, money, tradition, convention and hierarchy. A form made up by partly allegorical and party real images seen through the eyes of a young student, who, escaping from a dormitory, spends a winter night, walking around the city with no clear purpose and looking for easy entertainment and a new style of life. However, something prevents him from irretrievable damnation, maybe pride or the feeling of shame towards his former friends? An accidentally encountered girl falls in love with him despite his internal dilemmas. Both of them are led to believe that their mutual feelings can be the only constant value in the world full of doubts, fear and anxiety.

Dialogues in Polish and German.
