The Black Cross

(Krzyżacy)

1960   >   historical drama / costume drama

One Poland’s most popular films, with an audience of up to 32 million viewers.

Poland’s first historic blockbuster filmed to celebrate the 550th anniversary of the victory
at Grunewald.

An adaptation of the immensely popular novel by the Nobel prize laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz.

Aleksander Ford masterfully crafted two story lines which present the reality of the Teutonic Knights with meticulous detail. Jurand of Spychów fights the treacherous Teutonic Knights of Szczytno while Zbyszko of Bogdaniec wins the heart of Jurand’s daughter, Danuśka,  and after her death - that of Jagienka.

The plot is set in the early XVth century. Poles are plagued by the Teutonic Knights on borderlands between Poland and their territories. During a raid Jurand, a knight from Spychów, saves Polish merchants who were beaten and imprisoned by the Teutonic Knights. In revenge, the Knights burns Spychów to the ground and murders Jurand’s wife. Zbyszko falls in love with Jurand’s daughter and swears to bring her the peacock feathers from the helmet of the Teutonic Knight who killed her mother. The stories are presented against a backdrop of international political and military conflict.
