Susanne and the Boys

(Zuzanna i chłopcy)

1961   >   psychological

Packed full of tension, this feature film explores the popular theme of people faced with extreme adversity.

The film’s first part unfolds against the backdrop of a genuine music festival called Jazz Camping Kalatówki, with cameo appearances from popular jazz musicians Jerzy Matuszkiewicz, Roman Wyląg and Andrzej Trzaskowski, author of the film’s music score.

An exciting adventure in the mountains turns into a fight for survival and a test for the characters’ integrity and depth of their feelings.

Held in the Tatra mountains, the jazz festival is attended by a gorgeous young starlet Zuzanna. Her real goal is to meet with her beau Karol who explores nearby grottos with his friend Marek. Following an unpleasant incident at the dance, Karol takes Zuzanna and Marek on a trip to a recently discovered grotto. Upon their arrival, the protagonists realize that their way back was cut off, while the grotto gradually fills with water. If they want to survive, they must venture into yet unexplored passageways. During a challenging and dangerous trek, the two men reveal their true colours. Quiet and soft-spoken Marek demonstrates courage and readiness for sacrifice, while cocky Karol panics.
