Olympic Fire

(Znicz olimpijski)

1970   >   war drama

A terrifying story that takes place during World War II, inspired by the life of Helena Mursarzówna, Bronisław Czech and Stanisław Marusarz, Polish skiers, who under German occupation, acted as couriers in the Tatra Mountains, which cost some of them their lives.

Adaptation of the novel „Nocne szlaki” by Cezary Chlebowski.

Beautiful scenery of the Tatra Mountains and skiing bravado.

The year 1940. Germans are trying to destroy a conspiratorial network of couriers in the Tatra Mountains, some of which are great Polish skiers. The coach Schmidt arrives in Zakopane, offering the sportsmen privileges and taking part in tournaments as representatives of the Third Reich. The characters refuse his offer. Having been exposed, they manage to escape to Hungary, where they embark on another task. Their mission has tragic consequences.

„Znicz olimpijski” has gone down in history because of the feat of the legendary stuntman Krzysztof Fus, who – in line with the screenplay – jumped out from a cable car on Kasprowy Wierch. While shooting another version of the dangerous scene Fus had a serious accident. That event led to defining the stunt profession and creating respective regulations.
