The film is an adaptation of the novel by Ryszard Kłyś under the same title. Numerous retrospectives spun around the main theme – the story of Tymon who had a difficult childhood and who is trying to follow an ethical and moral code.
 
Tymon grows up in a series of orphanages and correctional facilities. After reaching adulthood he moves into a hotel for workers. He’s conscientious and friendly, he avoids conflict He falls in love with a girl from a nearby town. He is soon promoted to team leader. One of his friends loses all his savings playing cards. Tymon wins back his money, but the friend commits suicide. Tymon slowly stops believing in justice and order.
