The Great Give-Away

(Wielka wsypa)

1992   >   action/ drama

A picture showing the social and economic changes taking place in Poland during the fall of communism.

The plot openly and purposefully refers to the character of Lech Grobelny and Bezpieczna Kasa Oszczędności (Safe Credit Union) that he established.

The screenplay is based on the novel „Szmal, kryminał” by Czesław Magnowski.

A story about the forming of the Polish capitalism told through the prism of adventures of a clever money-changer, who wants to take advantage of the opportunities that democracy has to offer.

Poland under martial law. Jarek Bronko, an intelligent and entrepreneurial wheeler-dealer crosses paths with dangerous people. Having got himself into some serious trouble, he makes a smart plan, which lands him in prison as a political prisoner. Behind the bars he achieves a strong position and establishes valuable connections. After the fall of communism, he is set free. Together with the former state services officials, he starts a new business by establishing a shadow bank which offers clients 40% of profit. However, he is aware of the fact that for his partners he is merely a potential scapegoat.

In 1994 a film “Szczur” was made - a follow-up, showing later adventures of Jarek Bronko vel Branicki.
