(Wielka majówka)

1981   >   comedy/ feature

Polish adaptation of American road films. The leitmotiv of the picture is youth, freedom and carelessness, unexpected adventures of two young characters set against the backdrop of concerts and a recording session of the Maanam rock band.

A young boy – Rysiek escapes home from foster care once again. His father sends him back, but he chooses freedom. Hungry and wandering around without any purpose he breaks into a random villa. While searching for food, he comes across a bag full of money. Now, he can go to Warsaw. At the railway station he meets Julek, a small conman, who pretends to be a sailor on vacation. Spotting an opportunity to make some easy profit, Julek offers to help the boy. They spend the found money on luxurious clothes, a car and hiring the most expensive apartment in Victoria hotel. Julek takes control over the money, he buys plenty of useless things and gets involved in some shady businesses. Nevertheless, with time, the boys become friends and develop mutual understanding, in particular after Julek spots a TV announcement about Rysiek’s disappearance. The young runaway feels happy, has got a friend and gets to know Maanam rock group as well as takes part in their concerts. To be perfectly happy he wants to see a real giraffe. He’s come to Warsaw predominantly for this purpose, willing to see with his own eyes in the zoo that such an animal actually exists. Unfortunately there are no giraffes in the enclosure at the zoo. To celebrate his 16th birthday Rysiek throws a party at the hotel, during which Julek tells him the truth about himself. On the next day, the boys secretly leave the hotel. Soon almost all the money is gone. The boys are arrested by the police. Engrossed in listening to the charges, the participants of the trial fail to notice when the accused leave the room. Outside the court Maanam rock band and a real giraffe are waiting for them.
