The inhabitants of a fishing village are terrorized by Dziwun, a malignant spirit of the Vistula River. He has an ally in treacherous witch Kobylicha, who pretends to be a wife of a simple peasant. The witch is doing everything she can to prevent her stepdaughter Sawa from marrying the handsome blacksmith Warsz. When her tricks fail one after another, Kobylicha turns for help to Dziwun, who kidnaps Sawa and hides her in the depths of the river. The girl can only be saved by the legendary Mermaid, the guardian of the Vistula, who according to a prophecy can defeat Dziwun.
