A tragic fate of a lonely man, ill-adapted to life, who is unable to use the opportunity he’s given. The picture shows bitter truth about the world, where interest is short-lived and wasted opportunities are lost forever.

Władysław is a cashier in a bank. He rents a room in an old house. He’s secretly in love with his female colleague – Marta. Władysław has a peculiar hobby – he takes care of sick birds he finds in the park. One day he becomes a hero as he manages to prevent a fire at the bank. His situation changes dramatically, he gets a high award, a promotion and keys to a new apartment. He gives radio and TV interviews as well as catches the eye of Marta who moves in with him. Władysław wants to bring over his old mother and move the cages with birds to his apartment. Marta disagrees and the frustrated character starts to drawn his sorrows in alcohol more and more frequently. He’s sacked from work and radio and television lose interest in him. Eventually, he ends up in a psychiatric hospital, where he’s visited by his former neighbor Marysia, who attempted to commit a suicide. Together they swallow a handful of pills and happily decide to stay together forever.
