Wild Horses

(Tarpany)

1962   >   psychological/drama

A poorly known film of Kazimierz Kutz, an outstanding film director, author of the famous “Silesian trilogy”, laureate of numerous prizes, including “Platinum Lions” awarded for his lifetime achievements at the 34th Polish Feature Films Festival in Gdynia.

A film made in a beautiful, wild scenery, among others in a real Experimental Facility of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Popielno, which still exists on the Popielański Peninsula surrounded by four Mazurian lakes.

A story about a complicated love triangle interrupted by a stranger.

A young student Jędrek accidentally arrives at a tarpan reserve, located far away from any civilization. The boy, fascinated by the beautiful Basia, accepts a job offer from the facility’s manager – Adam. Gradually, Jędrek realizes that the inhabitants of the forest mansion have strange if not toxic relations. Adam, who was a brave conspirator during the war, is totally consumed by his passion and doesn’t notice that his marriage is falling to pieces. His wife Nina feels neglected and imprisoned, and she also regrets having given up on her own dreams and ambitions for her husband. Basia perceives Adam as an ideal man and hopes to take Nina’s place one day. The tension among the character reaches the climax during a festive dinner celebrating the 15th wedding anniversary of Nina and Adam.

Lieutenant colonel Karol Rómmel, a legendary equestrian champion, a soldier of pre-war cavalry who represented Poland at the Olympic Games three times plays a supporting role of the equerry Zych.
