Songs Over Dew

(Śpiewy po rosie)

1982   >   drama

The film depicts the community of a small, contemporary village, which becomes electrified after one of its inhabitants returns from prison. The film shows a kind of collective memory which makes past grievances, conflicts and suspicions come alive despite the flow of time.

Zdzich returns to a small village close to the Augustowska Forest. He was accused of having shot a policeman and despite clearly biased witnesses, he got a sentence. Now, the locals are afraid that he will take revenge for the unjust accusations. Zdzich hides in the forest. One day he meets Romanek, son of Jadźka whose honor he once defended in a fight. Romanek can’t tell him who his father is. Their meetings become more frequent and they become friends. Zdzich decides to leave his hiding place and ostentatiously comes to a church service. He proposes to Jadźka who agrees to marry him. He also explains to the locals the circumstances of his arrest. On the next day the forester is killed with a mysterious bullet. Zdzich is the last person that was seen with, which causes a lot of commotion in the village. The boys decide to implement the mob rule and Zdzich is rescued by policemen Bronek. Someone shoots at Bronek and Zdzich when they are riding a motorbike. Fortunately neither of them is wounded. A chase of the shooter begins. At some point people start calling one another. A dead body of the shepherd Ebe with an attached  improvised firearm has been recovered from the river.
