Rat

(Szczur)

1994   >   action/ drama

Dynamic plot referring to contemporary reality and a strong main character are the two greatest assets of this action drama with elements of comedy and slice-of-life cinema.

Polish businessman Jarek Branicki organizes a beauty pageant. As the man in charge, he expects his girlfriend to win it and suggests this outcome to the judges. At the same time, however, he is on the verge of bankruptcy and tries to escape the country after being cornered by his creditors. Recognized by a passenger on the train, he flees and finds refuge in the underground passages of Warsaw’s central railway station. He joins a group of homeless persons whose charismatic leader Tramp takes him under his wings. It turns out they both grew up in the same orphanage. Tramp shows Jarek his treasure – a huge collection of personal files of former communist security service collaborators. Every day, he burns one file, thus absolving one sinner of his sins. Jarek uses the files to blackmail some politicians. He starts a very dangerous game that gets several of the homeless persons killed. State services begin the hunt for the blackmailer, looking to terminate him. The files also attract the attention of a gang led by Boss. Eventually, Jarek realizes that the secrets in his possession are too dangerous. He destroys the files on the bank of the Vistula.
