Screen adaptation of a novel by Jan Józef Szczepański.
The main character is played by Janusz Gajos, who became hugely popular around the same time thanks to his portrayal of the iconic Janek Kos in the legendary TV series “Four Tank Men and a Dog”.
Made with great attention to detail and authenticity, the film meticulously depicts the reality of everyday life of Poles under Nazi occupation. The authors chose not to focus solely on the military struggle, which allowed them to paint a full and multidimensional picture of the past, as well as deepen the psychology of the main characters.
In WWII Cracow, former university student Michał works in a freight forwarding company based in Salvator while also being a member of the resistance movement. One day, he finds out that Zyga, his friend in the movement, has been caught by the Gestapo. The man is released shortly afterwards, following which the Germans start arresting other members of the movement. Zyga is deemed a traitor, with Michał ordered to terminate him. Although initially Michał avoids the confrontation, he changes his mind after he learns that his girlfriend has been arrested for hiding a Jewish woman. He meets Zyga, who explains to him why he betrayed the movement and calmly awaits his death.
