1966   >   slice of life/drama

A drama portraying the forming of Polish society in the Recovered Territories through the story of an unusual family.

A film adaptation of a novel by Maciej Patkowski.

The scenes depicting St. John’s Eve celebrations were filmed with the National Silesian Song and Dance Team.

Retired railway man Świeca has an argument with his rebellious daughter during which he tells her she’s adopted. The girl runs off and Świeca has a heart attack. In his memories, he returns to the last days of the war, when he had to seek refuge in a small town in Silesia to cure his wounds. After healing, he and a group of new friends reopened the local railway junction. Soviet soldiers left an orphaned girl under his care. Many years later, he took in Karol and his sister Hela from Podkarpacie as well. Karol, who after joining the army lost his job, his fiancée and his father, found a new life thanks to Świeca. He also fell in love with Jadwiga, but the feeling was not mutual. When Karol learns that Świeca is not well, he tries to find Jadwiga among a crowd celebrating St. John’s Eve.
