Women's Republic

(Rzeczpospolita babska)

1969   >   comedy of manners

An unforgettable comedy starring plenty of great actors.

A contemporary rendition of “Śluby panieńskie” by Aleksander Fredro.

A hilarious story about female/male rivalry leading to marriage.

A battalion of demobbed soldiers under the command of a strict lieutenant Krystyna

arrive at an abandoned mansion on the Recovered Territories. Under her influence the girls swear that they will not show any interest in men for half a year. When they meet a group of former soldiers, a conflict develops, which turns into fierce rivalry. At least officially, because as the time goes by, members on both sides of the conflict develop strong feelings for one another. Also lieutenant Krystyna finds love in captain Staszek’s arms. Before they marry, they are the best men at the collective marriage ceremony of their subordinates.

One of the films made in connection with celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Polish People’s Republic.
