No More Divorces

(Rozwodów nie będzie)

1964   >   comedy

A directing debut of Jerzy Stefan Stawiński, great screenwriter collaborating with the leading Polish artists, co-author of the success of the Polish Film School, author of screenplays for such great pictures as “Kanał”, “Eroica” or “Pułkownik Kwiatkowski”.

Cameo appearances by superb Polish actors: Wieńczysław Gliński, Adam Pawlikowski, Zbigniew Cybulski and Teresa Iżewska.

Short and pertinent stories that have two things in common: they all refer to marriage and they are all set in the same place: the Registry Office in Warsaw, where three couples come, one after another – every one with a different story. The stories make an accurate and diversified picture of attitudes and behavior of the contemporary Polish youth.

Event 1

Tomek awaits his fiancée Alina, who is running late, in the Registry Office. Time passes and people begin to look at him ironically and sympathetically. When Alina eventually turns up Tomek, humiliated, breaks off the engagement. Accidentally, the characters come back home from the Registry Office on the same bus. During an emotional conversation, they reveal hidden feelings, fears and grudges. However, when the time comes to say goodbye, the young couple decide to stay together.

Event 2

Joanna and Janusz get to know each other at their friend’s party. She is cool and inaccessible, whereas he is a typical playboy. Their interest in each other turns into rivalry. They end up marrying because of a bet. At the beginning, they want to get a quick divorce but after a night spent talking they decide to give this untypical marriage a chance.

Event 3

Kasia and Tadek run away to Warsaw to get married. At the Registry Office it turns out that they are minors. The bridegroom-to-be decides to get back home but the feisty and self confident Kasia believes she will do fine in the capital city. The naive and inexperienced girl gets a painful lesson and only accidentally manages to avoid danger. She decides to begin studies and forget about marriage – at least for the time being.
