The film provides an analysis of passing and breaking up connections with the past, but also the appearance of new opportunities if only one finds the strength to take them. The film is an adaptation of Jadwiga Żylińska’s short story.
Magdalena returns to her home town after many years to attend her grandfather’s funeral and get family heritage. On the train she meets Olek, who walks her to her house. At home Magdalena notices a dramatic contrast between the idealized hometown of her childhood and the reality. She cannot establish contact with the people who used to be close to her, they seem inert and incompatible with the contemporary times to her. She feels like a stranger in the places she used to know so well. A man who had a crush on her invites her to dinner, during which, drunk, he proposes to her. Magdalena refuses to marry him. Upon returning home, she is surprised to see Olek waiting for her. They spend the night together, knowing that they cannot be together. In the morning Olek sneaks out and Magdalena decides never to come back to her hometown again. She gets rid of her old furniture and leaves.
