The film shows a conflict between the underground movement and the communist regime with a tragic final. Its action is set in the times of establishing the Polish People's Republic.

The autumn of 1944, a town in the region of Lubelszczyzna. A communist – sergeant Łukasz Otryna takes over the local police station after corporal Dunajec, who, together with the other policemen, are undercover members of the Home Army. Otryna persistently tries to execute the new policy. Dunajec doesn’t question the policy itself but disapproves of Otryna’s methods. They gradually lose trust in each other. A few policemen switch to the department of the National Armed Forces. Dunajec commits suicide and Otryna feels responsible for it.
