Story of a soldier accomplishing his task against unfavorable circumstances and weakness of the human body - shown in the form of a ballad.

A group of partisans retreat after being surrounded by Germans. Corporal Koral is given order to evacuate the wounded, unconscious lieutenant Brzoza and Jastrząbek. All the remaining partisans are to get to the extraction point, where a doctor and transportation are waiting for them. The enemy massacres them and there is nobody waiting for them in the extraction point. One of the partisans deserts. Karol reminds himself the time of war while waiting for help. He decides to look for some water. When he returns he discovers that Maciek is the only man alive. Karol doesn't give up. He tries to get to his squad taking advantage of the darkness of the night.
