The film follows up on the story of the girls from the novel „Dziewczęta z Nowolipek”, presenting life early 20th century life.

Kwiryna and her husband Roman run a store. Roman tries to help a poor girl – his wife becomes jealous.  She takes full ownership of a townhouse  they bought as she is afraid of Roman’s wasteful spending.  Amelka is the pharmacist’s wife.  She leads a peaceful and affluent life.  Bronka does work for a charity institution. She’s accused of taking too much interest in members’ husbands and quits. Amelka, tired of wealth, takes on sewing dresses for orphans. When delivering them to the vicarage, she meets Andrzej, the priest’s nephew.  He really impresses her. The priest takes notice and sends him to Warsaw, which brings Amelka to despair. Bronka and Ignaś rekindle old romance, but Ignaś won’t leave his wife. Bronka starts dating another man. While in a nightclub Roman sees a girl he once tried to help. He accuses Kwiryna it’s her fault she ended up there. Amelka has health issues. She’s cured by the new pharmacy clerk who  becomes her lover. The makeshift repairs of the town house aren’t enough to prevent a disaster. The building collapses. Kwiryna saves a child from the rubble. It turns out Roman has leukemia. The sudden death of her husband is devastating to the wife. Amelia’s love affair with the pharmacy clerk is in bloom. The pharmacist knows there’s something between them, but decides not to do anything about it. When Amelka tells him the truth on her own, he nervously asks for a Veronal pill. She pours the entire vial into his glass. The pharmacist dies. The delivery man Gończyk knows about  her love affair. Someone tells the police. Amelka is accused of poisoning.  Ignacy and Bronka live together. Finally Bronka leaves him, offended by her lover’s views and political activity. Amelka is found innocent. The pharmacy clerk has a new lover whom he plans to marry. Kwiryna invites Amelka and Bronka for Easter. After leaving, Bronka throws herself under a car. Amelka confesses to her maid that she killed her husband
