A story of a man involved in the reconstruction of the Polish state, who due to a decision taken in the past is now condemned both by the underground and new authorities. The film presents the mechanisms of the 1950s politics, together with the moral attitudes and views under the conditions of the newly regained independence.
Under the amnesty of 1956, Roman Marecki, a former officer of the Home Army, is released from prison. At the end of the war he was appointed to execute the head of a local village sentenced to death for collaboration with the new, communist authorities. As he never completed his task, the underground army has now issued a death sentence on him. Marecki runs away to Szczecin, where he is actively involved in the reconstruction of the city. He never talks about his past. Unfortunately, he is denunciated and arrested. As a former soldier of the Home Army, who never revealed himself, he is sentenced to life imprisonment. He regains freedom after the amnesty.
