The problem of integration of the young generation of intelligentsia with rural backgrounds presented through the story of a talented young boy who loses his country identity but at the same time can’t adapt to city life.

Jan the café pianist drinks to dull the shock of news about the death of his mother. This is the beginning of the story of his life. As a farm boy he gets help from the church organ player and gets a education in music. He decides to pursue a career, he keeps his rural background a secret. His friend Paweł composes innovative and avant-garde music, but their teacher’s don’t appreciate it. Nonetheless, it get attention abroad and Pawel is to get a scholarship, but his application is rejected since doesn’t speak any foreign languages. He can’t cope with the envy other treat him with and losing his girlfriend – he commits suicide. Jan is aware that he’s forsaken his ideals. He missed his chance. He’s too weak to change anything.
