Winter, 1945, demobilized soldiers and their families are taking a cable ferry across the Vistula river. The cable breaks and the ferry drifts through ice floe, straight onto mines. The young militia officer Kros organizes a rescue mission. He finally acquires tugboats. The situation onboard the ferry is becoming more dramatic with each passing second. Gasoline spills onboard from a hole in the tank. The rescue team can’t see in the dark. The ferry drifts among the mines. The passengers’ singing helps locate the lost ferry. Everyone is saved.
