Return to Earth

(Powrót na ziemię)

1966   >   psychological/drama

A film directed by Stanisław Jędryka, famous for his, nowadays classic, productions for children and young people, such as “Wakacje z duchami”, “Podróż za jeden uśmiech” or “Stawiam na Tolka Banana”.

A film starring Stanisław Mikulski, an icon of Polish cinema, the actor who gained immense popularity with his role of Hans Kloss in the classic series “Stawka większa niż życie” and who still enjoys the appreciation of the next generations of viewers.

A story about the inability to break free from the burden of the past. A moving psychological drama revolving around the trauma of the occupation period, preventing the characters from coming back to their normal life and destroying their love for one another. Tragic experiences become a nightmare which keeps recurring in memories and distorts the perception of reality. Although finished, the war still has a devastating effect on the mind of those who have survived.

After World War II, Stefan, a young doctor, has difficulty settling in in everyday life. He is tormented by the war memory of him and his beloved Wanda trying to commit suicide. When the woman threw herself into the rapid current of the river, Stefan was stopped by a Polish railwayman. Unexpectedly, the man learns that Wanda has also survived. The both characters meet, but feel like strangers to one another and can’t come to terms with the demons of the past. Going back to what they used to have turns out to be impossible.
