An adaptation of Wacław Biliński’s novel “Wrócić do siebie”.
A brutal and realistic picture of the situation in the Recovered Territories in the first days after the end of World War II. The title “Pobojowisko” (“Shambles”) doesn’t only denote the place of action, but is also a metaphorical reference to the state of society and people damaged by the nightmare of World War II.
Bogdan Łanowiecki, a Polish Army soldier demobilized due to the wounds sustained in battle, settles down in a town at the seaside, in the Recovered Territories. The town under a symbolic name of “Pobojowisko” (“Shambles”) is a place of constant clashes and friction between the army, the militia, members of the underground army and ordinary criminals attracted to the West by the vision of quick money or the ability to flee abroad. Nearly every person living here has a secret and obscure motives. Łanowiecki decides to bring order to the town. His determination grows with his feelings for Łucja, a beautiful nurse with a tragic past.
