A film based on the real events from the life of the amateur astronomer Adam Giedrys, a tailor by profession. Entirely devoted to his passion, he spends every free moment observing the sky or constructing optical instruments, which eventually results in his alienation and personal problems.
It is 1954. The residents of a provincial town wait for a sun eclipse. Some of them, including the tailor Romanek, enjoy a drinking session in the local inn. Romanek bets that he can guess the measurements of the woman behind the bar. His guess is correct and he wins a liter of vodka. Romanek gets drunk, collapses and is taken to hospital. He is convinced that while under anesthesia he had an out-of-body experience during which he wandered in space. He studies astronomy intensively. Totally focused on his desire to discover a new planet, he begins to neglect his family life, other people start treating him like a madman. In the meantime the first Sputnik is launched into space. The local authorities become interested in this subject and decide to help Romanek. An observatory is arranged in his apartment. Years pass, but his passion for astronomy doesn’t go away. After his photos of satellites landing on the moon are published in press, he becomes famous. He tries to reconcile with his wife, but to no avail. His participation in the congress of astronomers also brings disappointment. It turns out that he has become an acknowledged expert in accurate reading of people’s measurements. Discouraged he resigns from his sky observations. Feeling desperate, he goes to a restaurant and orders alcohol which in his case means a life threat.
