Pills for Aurelia

(Pigułki dla Aurelii)

1958   >   war/drama

A war action drama by Stanisław Lenartowicz, a director underappreciated and overlooked for many years, nowadays rightly recognized as the “mood master” and one of the greatest individualities in Polish cinema.

A fast-paced and thrilling action combined with a realistic portrayal of the life of Poles under occupation builds up the original atmosphere of the film, distinguishing it from other movies based on the same theme.

A story of a theoretically successful, but in the end tragic action of the Polish Home Army.

Cracow, 1943. A Home Army unit prepares for an action during which the soldiers plan to free their friend arrested by the Gestapo. Three days before the scheduled action Germans take over their secret arsenal. The Polish soldiers decide to get hold of the weapon stored in a toy factory in Radom. A group of four, under the command of “Agat”, reaches the place and sees the plant being taken over by Germans. Nevertheless, they manage to recover the load and leave. On the way back the driver Michalak panics and doesn’t stop at a checkpoint, which alarms the Nazis. The venture ends with a dramatic escape, during which the members of the squad get killed.
