Madame Bovary, That's Me

(Pani Bovary - to ja)

1977   >   psychological/ drama

The story of a modern-day adventure-seeking Madame Bovary, set in communist Poland of the 1970s (the era of the First Secretary Edward Gierek), with one of the best roles of Jadwiga Jankowska-Cieślak.

Anna is busy raising her few-year-old son. She started running the house right  after her studies. The monotony of her life begins to catch up with her. Distancing herself from her constantly busy husband, she escapes into the world of fiction, reading Gustav Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary”. Just like the main character in the novel she wants to experience something great and unexpected. A momentary satisfaction comes when she is asked to be a model in a fashion show. One day she withdraws all her savings, buys luxury clothes and cosmetics, and books a trip to exotic countries. She rekindles an old relationship, but the actual date never takes place. Resigned, she walks along the platforms of the station, where she meets a young man. They spend the evening together. They confide their problems to one another. They rent a hotel room, but eventually Anna decides to go home. Standing in front of the door to her apartment, she puts her wedding ring back on.
