Beware of Yeti!

(Ostrożnie Yeti)

1971   >   comedy

A crazy, grotesque comedy resembling much later film parodies made in Mel Brooks’s style.

A directorial debut of Andrzej Czekalski, who won viewers’ acclaim as the author of the screenplay to the film “Ewa chce spać” directed by Tadeusz Chmielewski.

Reality shown in a distorting mirror, associations with mass culture, playing with styles and stereotypes, gags full of surreal humor – all this makes one of the most original Polish comedies of the communist times.

A superb cast with great cameo appearances, including Wiesław Gołas, Jan Kobuszewski, Wojciech Pokora, Roman Polański and Mieczysław Czechowicz.

Professor Karol goes to the airport to collect a parcel with the legendary Yeti. The chest is empty, though. The alleged escape of the “snowman” causes panic in the city. Professor is put in prison, but he escapes together with his cell buddy. Joined with one chain, the men decide to find the missing Yeti and get involved in a number of comical and dangerous situations. The whole thing turns out to be a mistake, however, during the crazy night the men become real friends.

The film wasn’t popular at the time it was screened. It was heavily criticized and forgotten for long years, however today it is gaining popularity and new fans.
