Unloved

(Niekochana)

1966   >   psychological/ melodrama

A study of passion and possessive love of Noemi, a Jewish woman, for Kamil, a young Pole. The intensity of her feelings becomes destructive and eventually repels Kamil.

On the last night before the outbreak of war, Noemi arrives at the manor house in Józefin. While waiting for Kamil, whom she expects to arrive there shortly, she reminisces about their turbulent relationship. Kamil is a 20-year-old student at the Academy of Fine Arts. Noemi works in the office of engineer Śliwa. Her love for Kamil is the most important thing in her life. The young man cannot fully understand that, hence the constant break-ups and make-ups that eventually drive Noemi to the verge of a nervous breakdown. When Kamil fails to show up at the manor house, she plunges into despair. As the woman runs on an empty railway track, the first sounds of the starting war echo in the background.
