Best in the World

(Najlepsze w świecie)

1976   >   drama/slice of life/psychological

A low-key slice-of-life drama about the complicated relations between children and adults and the real meaning of war.

One of the less known films by Stanisław Jędryka, who gained popularity thanks to his cult children's and teenage films such as "Wakacje z duchami", "Podróż za jeden uśmiech" and "Stawiam na Tolka Banana".

A screen adaptation of a once popular novel of the same title by Maria Ślipek.

A subtle tale about the need for acceptance and insurmountable barriers to mutual understanding.

Raised by a single mother, 10-year-old Kajetan finds his role model in heroic lieutenant Wandalin Gdowski. He is delighted to learn that the lieutenant will become his stepfather. The man and the boy become great friends. Problems begin to appear after the sudden death of Kaj's mother. Wandalin turns out to be completely unprepared for the duties related to raising a child. He is unable to show the boy his feelings, support and acceptance. Distraught by his mother's death, Kaj becomes convinced that his stepfather wants to get rid of him. To prove his worth, he embarks on a crazy expedition.
