A variety of attitudes, values and expectations of war heroes in the last months of the war and in the times of the formation of the People’s Republic of Poland.

A hospital close to the front line in a small town in the region of Lubelszczyzna. The hospital lacks personnel, equipment or medicine. Doctors Jackowski and Zanik and nurses Joanna and Krystyna try to do their best. Lieutenant Bendarczuk may face legs’ amputation and Krystyna tries to get some penicillin for him. Second lieutenant Łaszewski has been shot. Following an unsuccessful attack of a unit of the National Armed Forces on a prison Jacek, doctor Jackowski’s son is wounded. Jacek is associated with the underground movement, which propels Łaszewski to notify the Security Office that he is in hospital. To prevent that Joanna organizes a transport for Łaszewski and Bendarczuk. The ambulance is to be destroyed by a unit of the National Armed Forces. Joanna and Jackowski are arrested by the Security Office. Jackowski asks doctor Zanik to save his son. Doctor Zanik has no idea of Joanna’s plan. He puts Jacek in the ambulance that is to transport Bednarczuk and Łaszewski.
