On the Earth and in the Sky

(Na niebie i na ziemi)

1974   >   psychological/ drama

A story of a gifted pilot Major Grela whose health problems stand in the way of his passion for flying. It turns out that what makes him a great pilot can also be useful on the ground. The film features a dazzling camerawork in air-to-air shots.

As an accomplished pilot, Major Grela has a job that he is passionate about. He hopes to become a head of the team of test pilots. Unfortunately, the commander gives the job to his old friend Major Horycki. In the past, they competed with each other for the attention of Krystyna who later became Grela’s wife. Deteriorating health and a sense of letdown deepen Grela’s disillusionment and bitterness.  Following a fight with Grela, Krystyna moves out. Desperate Grela  flies his plane in a reckless manner, but is lucky to land in one piece. Finally, he resigns himself to a new situation. Horycki is still a friend, Krystyna returns home and Grela’s knowledge and experience prove to be helpful at work at the airport.
