A psychological portrait of engineer Andrzej Rudnicki, who’s a ship designer taking stock of his entire life, maintained in a new wave convention. The film includes a few time planes, the present is intertwined with memories and the reality is peppered with visions, guesses and innuendo.
Rudnicki is a 40-year-old engineer who designs ships. His first vessel is about to be watered and a festive reception is organized to celebrate the event. Despite the unquestionable success Rudnicki is full of sorrow. He thinks that everything in his life came too late. The diploma, his marriage, his wealth and acclaim should have come much earlier. He decides to spend his well-deserved holiday with his wife Marta in their cottage house at the seaside, where his 40th birthday is celebrated in the company of his friends and Sylwia whom he met at the reception. The party goes in an unexpected direction. Too much alcohol fuels the need for destruction, parts of the house are burnt down. Marta is terrified and runs away. Rudnicki experiences a strange state of mind, he starts seeing probable scenarios. He loses consciousness after falling off an embankment. In the morning he wakes up and heads towards the pier where a woman is standing. Maybe this is only his imagination and there’s nobody on the pier?
