Kaszebe

A feature film bringing the history and culture of Kashubia closer to the viewers.

Authenticity of events is highlighted by the sets and costumes, and most of all the Kashubian dialogues.

A moody, lyrical story in which elements of legends and traditions are interwoven with historical events.

Pomerania, 1892. The population of Kashubia is defending its identity from the Germans, who are monopolizing trade and fisheries. During a storm on the coast a Swedish boat crashes. The owner who survives the crash agrees to sell the wreck to the local fishermen, who renovate it together. The second of the survivors, Eryk, falls in love with a mysterious girl who after the death of her beloved lost her senses. Under the influence of reciprocal feelings the girl returns to a normal life. However, the keelboat "Kaszebe" is destroyed by German troops. Eryk is killed. The girl is again doomed to loneliness and fruitless waiting.

Ryszard Bera's film is based on the folklore and tradition of Kashubians. The consultant and author of the dialogues was Jan Piepka, author of short stories and poems in Kashubian. The writer appeared on the screen as the fisherman Goyka.

The history of the keelboat “Kaszëbë” presented in the film is based on historical events. In 1892 the beginnings of first ‘maszoperias’ were created - fishermen's unions, thanks to which the Kashubians were able to resist Prussian domination on the Baltic Sea.
