A gallery of various individuals set against the backdrop of a church fair taking place in a provincial town. There are no prospects here, just people exploiting each other in different ways.
A church fair is held in a small countryside town in 1950s Poland. The Sobczaks are preparing for the marriage of their younger daughter Marysia. The older daughter's fiancé owns the only car in the town and therefore is constantly asked for favors by his future father-in-law. Everyone is wondering who will get the room of the dead teacher. No one cares what will happen to her grandson Jasio. Staszek pays Magda a visit. He does not have a pass and is stopped by the military police. The cobbler's family, the Kasprzaks and a teacher with an allocation certificate engage in a fierce fight for the dead teacher's room. Now homeless, Jasio wanders around the town. Fed up with the narrow-mindedness of the local population, Władek and Zosia decide to leave.
