An Unnecessary Man

(Mężczyzna niepotrzebny)

1981   >   psychological/ drama

A story of two sisters and their relationship with the same man. One of them initiates a sort of a test of feelings, which results in a decision that has tragic consequences.

Małgosia studies medicine at the university. She is pregnant by Paweł, a doctor who earlier was in a relationship with her older sister Ewa. Ewa suggests that she has an abortion. She sees her younger sister's relationship with Paweł as absurd. Aware of Paweł's affair with Helena, Małgosia decides to provoke him by telling him that she is pregnant by someone else. He does not reveal his feelings to her. It turns out that Ewa had an abortion in the past and can no longer have children. Paweł was the father. An argument between Ewa and Paweł witnessed by Małgosia causes her to decide to have the abortion. Drunk, Paweł tells Małgosia he loves her. They decide to stay together.
