Husband of His Wife

(Mąż swojej żony)

1961   >   comedy

A directing debut of the Polish comedy master – Stanisław Bareja, film director, screenwriter and actor honored with the title of the best Polish comedy director of the century.

The screenplay is based on a popular pre-war farce “Mąż Fołtasiówny” by Jerzy Jurandot, staged again in 1960 in the Warsaw based Syrena Theater.

A still up-to-date satire about the cult surrounding sportsmen, usually at the expense of representatives of the less popular areas of culture and art.

A great sprinter Jadwiga Fołtasiówna marries a talented composer – Michał Karcz. The young couple have genuine feelings for each other, however their life quickly turns into a nightmare. Michał is annoyed by the never ending presence of press, Jadwiga’s coach’s interfering with their life and the regime introduced by a maid hired without his knowledge. However, what pains him the most is that he has become „his wife’s husband” and his successes are completely downplayed by the media and the surroundings. The young couple go through a tough crisis, however with their friends’ help they reach an understanding.

The main character was created based on the great Polish athlete and Olympic champion from 1932 Stanisława Walasiewiczówna.

The authors made sure the world of sports was presented in a realistic manner. The scenes showing the competition use real footage from Janusz Kusociński Memorial, shot by the team a month before the official start of the film making process. A cameo appearance by the legendary coach of Polish boxers Feliks Stamm. The film also features Bohdan Tomaszewski as sports commentator.
