Maria and Napoleon

(Marysia i Napoleon)

1966   >   comedy/ costume

A love story inspired by the affair between Marie Walewska and Emperor Napoleon. Using two time frames and interpreting historical facts rather freely, the authors of the film created an appealing vision of mutual infatuation of the two main characters. By means of a game of imagination, the plot shifts from contemporary times to the Napoleonic era, where dreams take the form of Marie and Napoleon. The film also features the beautiful  landscapes of Walewice.

On his way to Warsaw, young French historian Napoleon Beranger stops in Walewice, where he meets charming university student Marysia. One of the walls of the manor house is decorated with paintings of emperor Napoleon and Marie Walewska. Napoleon Beranger is surprised at Marysia's uncanny resemblance to Walewska. The plot shifts into a realm of dreams and imagination in which he is the emperor and Marysia is his beloved one.
