The End of the Holiday

(Koniec wakacji)

1974   >   drama, slice of life, teenage film

A well-known film by director Stanisław Jędryka, who gained popularity thanks to his cult children's and teenage films such as "Wakacje z duchami", "Podróż za jeden uśmiech" and "Stawiam na Tolka Banana".

A successful screen adaptation of a highly popular teenage novel by Janusz Domagalik.

The main characters are played by debutant Marek Sikora, who was selected from among several thousand candidates, and Agata Siecińska who became hugely popular a year earlier thanks to her appearance as Karioka in "Stawiam na Tolka Banana".

A psychological study of a teenage boy who has to face "adult" problems such as the break-up of his family and falling in love for the first time.

14-year-old Jurek spends his summer holidays in his Silesian hometown of Borzechów. The boy gets into a conflict with a group of peers bullying their weaker colleagues. He is also shaken by the mysterious disappearance of his mother, who has allegedly gone away to a sanatorium. Unexpectedly, he falls in love with Elżbieta, a girl from Warsaw. Slowly, Jurek finds out that his mother left his family to live with a new partner. The new experiences accelerate his coming of age and turn him into a responsible, courageous man. The end of summer holidays becomes a symbolic end of his childhood.
