The lead character of the first novel is a girl called Matylda whose dream is to have colourful tights. Wishing to please her granddaughter, the grandma knits thick striped tights for Matylda because of which the girl becomes a laughing stock in her class and loses the affection of her boyfriend. The mother, a modest clerk, eventually gives her the money to buy real tights, but Matylda refuses to accept it. She is aware of how hard her mother had to work for her dream pair of tights.

The second novel tells the story of Jadźka who goes to a new school. Her family is poor so the girl’s clothes are modest and plain, which makes her a laughing stock. Jadźka is very deeply touched by the cruelty of her school mates. The girl’s hardworking parents cannot pay enough attention to her problems and do not understand her personal tragedy.
