A story which is a form of self-presentation of the main character conveyed using an interesting concept of time reversal. The story begins when Andzia is sixty years old and goes back to the earliest moments of childhood and learning to walk under the guidance of her mother. The picture shows a very authentic, tangible reality, in which the good and bad moments of life, admiration and disappointment, grief and gratitude are inscribed.
The main character Andzia is a staid, sixty-year-old woman, living all her life in the same town where she was born. She has faced a series of life experiences that we learn about by going back in time. Ten years earlier she remarried. The second marriage to a retired baker, Solski, ensured her relative prosperity and peace. Her husband is a tenement owner, which brings in regular, reliable income. Previously, she was raising two children as a single mother. She worked as a washer in a restaurant, and her biggest dream was to give away her daughter to be married and for her son to acquire a profession. Concern for her children has always been her main motivation in life. Even when they reach adulthood and become independent, Andzia continues to subordinate everything to acquiring money to support her children. She has tragic memories of the Nazi occupation. During the displacement of Jews from the town, she lost her best friend. Before that her first marriage takes place. She did not marry a man she really loved but submitted to persuasions for a marriage of convenience. Her first husband soon drowns in a river. Even as a little girl she is aware that she can rely solely on herself and does not expect too much from the world. She spends her childhood in a poor house, she earns for a living by drying and selling herbs. The film ends with an image of a child making its first steps. This is Andzia.
