Eve Wants To Sleep

(Ewa chce spać)

1957   >   Satirical comedy

Directorial debut of Tadeusz Chmielewski, the leading comedy director in Polish cinema, a script writer and producer, the winner of 2015 Polish Film Festival (Gdynia) Platinum Lions for lifetime achievements.

An astonishing debut by 17 year old Barbara Kwiatkowska in the lead role of Ewa. She was cast after winning a Poland wide contest.

A noble and good-hearted girl’s adventure, unsuccessfully trying to find lodging in a unreal city of stupidity and crime.

The day before school starts the young girl arrives but the usher doesn’t let her in the dormitory. Ewa can’t find any place to stay for the whole night. She befriends a young policeman, who tries to help her and in the morning escorts her to the school gate.

An intelligent satiric comedy created in an atmosphere of a „neighborhood ballad”. A caricature of Lepold Tyrmand’s prose. A comedy drawing inspiration from each sub-genre, ranging from burlesque gags to sophisticated comedy.
