Bachelor Life In A Foreign Country

(Kawalerskie życie na obczyźnie)

1992   >   feature/ comedy

An adaptation of Jakub Wojciechowski’s diary entitled “Żywot własny robotnika”. The film director, in a characteristic way, presents the mundane life in the countryside. The picture emanates benevolent humor and sentimentalism. The main plot shows a reversal of the character’s erotic evolution, from purely physical to spiritual and idyllic love.

A young man called Michał goes to Germany to get a job and better life. He finds employment in a textile factory, where he makes friends with another Polish laborer – Stefek. They go to a dancing course together, where they learn social manners. Unfortunately the manners they learn do not fit in the circles where Michał spends most of his time. Eventually he joins a carousel man’s group and starts travelling with him. The carousel man and his aide Herman have a rich erotic life. Michał follows in their footsteps. He starts working in a boiler plant and moves in with a divorcee Frau Luther who has an incredible erotic temperament. Frau Luther keeps him busy all the time as a result of which Michał leaves her and goes to Westphalia where he starts working in a mine. Aroused erotically, he pays prostitutes for sex. A conflict in the mine makes him continue his journey. Once again he meets Stefek and they continue their erotic endeavors. Finally, he finds the love of his life.
