Yanosik

(Janosik)

1974   >   costume/ adventure

Funny  and fast-paced, this  swashbuckler movie tells the story of Janosik, a legendary highlander outlaw from the Tatra mountains.  Based on a hugely popular TV series, the feature film weaves events from the original episodes into a story about people’s justice, defending the weak and helping those in need.

Janosik, who is an orphan, was brought up in the mountains by a hermit.  During a trip to a nearby town, Janosik sticks up for a bullied peasant, for which is he is thrown into prison.  There, he meets a burly highlander Kwiczoł with whom he manages to escape. Highlander outlaws under the command of a chieftain Jakubek come to their rescue. The two fugitives decide to join the band of robbers. Jakubek and Janosik soon clash as both fancy Maryna. They decide to resolve the conflict by a duel. Janosik wins. According to the highlander outlaws’ code, he becomes the band’s new leader. Janosik and his outlaws are involved in a series of skirmishes with liveried domestic servants from a nearby manor house, rob wealthy merchants and distribute stolen goods among the poor, fight against ruthless masters and eventually come to defense of all oppressed and exploited folks. However, there is a heavy thunderstorm at their doorstep. More soldiers are sent to hunt Janosik down. In the final scene of Janosik’s and Maryna’s wedding,  the outlaws and their leader are surrounded and captured. A witness to the execution, a young highlander will continue Janosik’s mission.
