The Beast

(Bestia)

1979   >   psychological/ drama

This drama expressively shows sexual obsession, which consequently dissolves the personality of a wise and hard-working man, ultimately leading to a tragedy. The film is based on “The Devil” by Leo Tolstoy.

The action is set in Wielkopolska, just before the outbreak of World War I. The character is a man torn by passions, yet at the same time full of energy and plans for the future, who wants to use what he learnt while studying in Switzerland for economic purposes. He is a patriot promoting poetry and infecting others with his patriotic feelings. Paweł is a positive role model. The meeting with Dorota triggers an avalanche of passion, ruining sense and logic and leading to a tragic outcome.
