The Impossible Goodbye

(Dom bez okien)

1962   >   psychological drama

The feature film debut of director Stanisław Jędryka who gained popularity through his works for children and teens like the series “Wakacje z duchami”, “Podróż za jeden uśmiech” or “Stawiam na Tolka Banana”.

Wiesław Gołas’ fantastic performance showcases both his comedic and dramatic acting talents.

The film is a metaphoric and bitter story about passing and lack of acceptance.

A story taken from the history of a small traveling circus that has to face a double crisis.

The tiny travelling circus is facing bankruptcy. The troupe has one month to prepare a new and better program. Robert, a talented mime and clown joins them by chance. His performances are met enthusiasm by the audience. Robert begins to parody his less successful colleagues’ acts which causes them to stop liking him and provokes risky behavior. This causes one of the performers to have an accident and the young acrobat Teresa rejects Robert’s advances – the rebellious mime is forced to leave the circus, which moves on without him.

Elżbieta Czyżewska who played the acrobat performed the difficult evolutions herself. The remaining actors also underwent special training. Smaller roles were played by real circus artists.

The premiere of “The Impossible Goodbye” took place at the Cannes film festival. The critics and audiences were unmoved by the picture which prompted Stanisław Jędryka to return making films for youth.
